Road Map and Directions to Basin, Montana

Basin is a small town with a post office and wonderful postmistress, Mavis Parsons. It is easiest for her to get your mail to you and forward it after you leave if you do one of the following: For less than six months, use General Delivery for your address (there is no charge for this service). If you will be staying six months or more, rent your own post office box ($14/year, pro-rated when you leave). Do not use the Artist Refuge mailbox as it is difficult for us to forward your mail after you leave.

Each residence has a private phone for local access. Incoming long distance calls are direct to you. To call long distance you must have a calling card or telephone credit card. Phones are donated items; if you need an answering machine, computer line hook-up, or a particular type of phone, please bring one with you.

Residence facilities have basic furnishings. Bring your own linens (sheets, towels), a pillow, and a warm blanket or two if you're here during October through May. Kitchens are stocked with basic dishes, utensils, and cooking pans. Bring your favorite coffee-making device, mug, dish, or cooking device, etc. (ours are secondhand). If you have special needs, let us know and bring what you can. Talk over your furnishing needs with the Administrative Coordinator.

Groceries, Gas, Etc.
Groceries and gas are unavailable in Basin. There are two grocery stores and a gas station in Boulder which is nine miles away. For shopping, Helena, the State capitol, is about 45 miles in one direction and Butte is about 30 miles in the other direction.

Basin has two restaurants (a family-style and a pizza parlor). Laundry facilities are in the back of the Silver Saddle Bar or you can go to Boulder, Butte, or Helena.

Transportation/Rental Cars
It is difficult to get around without a car as distances here are great. For shorter stays you may not need your own transportation. We recommend you offer $5 per trip to volunteers who take you shopping or sightseeing. You will be responsible for making your own arrangements.

Avis, Budget, Enterprise and Hertz are available in both Helena and Butte. Alternatives are: Cents-ible Rent-a-Car (Helena) 406-443-7436; Payless (Helena) 406-723-4366; Rent-a-Wreck (Helena) 406-443-3635; and U-Save (Helena) 406-443-7283 or (Butte) 406-494-6001.

NOTE: Deer are a road hazard, particularly in the early morning and late evening, night hours.

Walk & Hikes
You will be able to walk out your door and take a hike in the woods. We recommend sturdy walking shoes and layers of clothing as the weather can become unexpectedly cool any time of year.

No Smoking Policy. The Artists Refuge is a non-smoking facility, except in designated areas.

No pets, please.
